Show Alert: The Walkervilles stroll into Detroit

Fri., Apr. 11
Magic Stick Lounge ~ Detroit
With Jeremy Porter and the Tucos and Moon Walks
$14

Don't believe The Walkervilles' Facebook profile:  "The Walkervilles are a Motown/rock influenced group from the Detroit area." Okay, believe the Motown/rock influenced part, the key word being "influenced." They're not just emulating the sound. Despite the retro white waiter shirts and bowties in their press photos and a name that summons images of a barbershop quartet, they're using Motown R&B, rock and soul as a springboard into contemporary interpretation. We're looking forward to seeing just how far they've come since this 2012 show review. We know how far they're coming for their show at the Stick. Across the river, because this trio is from Windsor. Listen: "Bag It Up" by The Walkervilles.

Show Alert: Join us in the Parlovr

Thurs., Jun. 28
Parlovr, Hooded Fang and Goose Hut
Magic Stick Lounge, Detroit

Montreal's Parlovr pop back into Detroit with their Pop Off Tour, supported by Hooded Fang (Toronto) and quirky Goose Hut, also from Montreal. Parlovr have already popped off a 2012 Polaris long list nomination for their new album, Kook Soul. Here's our show review from last year; we're big fans of their original alt rock.

We caught Hooded Fang at NXNE 2011, as part of the CBC Radio 3 showcase. In that incarnation they delivered listener favourites like "Tosta Mista" and "Promised Land," from the album Tosta Mista, characterized by a retro indie pop sound that sounds like it would be best coming from a car radio on a summer's night. The lineup has changed considerably since then; we're looking forward to seeing the results.

Goose Hut is new to us, but we like what we've heard so far. From their Tumblr:

"Goose Hut started out in the summer of 2011 in Montreal... quickly morphed into a band playing tunes tailored towards live performance: fun, hook-laden, and driven by an old-school punk rock attitude. There's an underlying sombre tone to the lyrics, but having those themes juxtaposed with relentlessly energetic music makes for an explosive combination."You can get their four-track EP, throw it at your dads house, for NYOP at their Bandcamp page.

Show Alert: Hey Rosetta! play Detroit Friday

Fri., Jun. 22
Magic Stick Lounge, Detroit
With Boy Wonders ~ tickets $10

When we found out an acquaintance from Minneapolis was attending this year's Bonnaroo in Nashville, Tenn., we of course told her to be sure to see Hey Rosetta! from St. John's, Newfoundland, and to tell them we said hi. "In college I worked at the campus radio station and I remember getting a promo copy of their first full-length," she said. "I'm excited to see how they've changed since then."

We were excited she had heard of Hey Rosetta!, and even more excited they're back in Detroit at the Magic Stick. The only thing that's changed since is that first album they've only gotten better with time, as last year's Seeds was every bit as impressive as Into Your Lungs. Give this great alt rock band as warm a welcome as this one.

Show Alert: Elliott BROOD

Thurs., Feb. 23
Magic Stick Lounge, Detroit
With Patrick Davy and the Ghosts

Bringing a little Northern Air to the winter that wasn't in Michigan, death country trio Elliott BROOD (Hamilton/Toronto) return to Detroit for the first time since 2009. We saw them three times last year (New Year's Eve at Lee's Palace in Toronto, Windsor's Capitol Theatre and Phog Phest III), and already braved one of the season's only snowstorms last month to catch them in Sarnia; they never bring anything but their all to a show. Celebrating 10 years as a band in 2012, their latest album, Days Into Years, chips away at the gritty death country label with a mellower vibe, but you can be sure of a foot-stomping, pan-clanging close to the show.
